Launching our Small Business Project Management Mini-Series

Alex, Amy, and a visitor at the Tuck Sponsor Table at the Vermont Nonprofit Summit

Summary:  Over the next few months, a team of six Tuck Consulting Group project management experts will be writing a long-form mini-series on project management, specifically geared towards small businesses. Since so much project management content is geared towards large-scale projects, we wanted to provide practical tools and techniques that will allow small businesses to be empowered instead of intimidated by project management.

“Project manager” has shown up on the top of the best and fastest growing jobs (in the U.S. and globally) nearly every year for the past 15 years. If you’ve been in the industry for a while, you have seen the 2021 PMI report stating we have a 25 million project professional gap that needs to be filled by 2030. While I love this self-serving report 😊 and the numbers may be a bit off (especially with the rapid adoption of AI), it’s still directionally correct.

The problem I’ve seen across the discipline over the past decade is around the type of talent attracted into the profession. A lot of these folks love the challenge of building a 5,000-line Microsoft Project Plans with dependencies, resource loading, and integrations with the overall portfolio. It’s not that these folks can’t be talented project managers. To the contrary, they are terrific project managers for large-scale projects, such as physical infrastructure builds, mega data centers, and construction project management. However, the majority of projects are small in nature with less than five project team members. So, the PM skilled at the big projects typically does not have the right tools or approach for the smaller ones.

That’s why we’re bringing together six consultants from the Tuck team to produce project management content geared towards small businesses!

The Format

It’s all about people, processes, and tools. We’re going to pull together articles, videos, white papers, infographics, and more that will help you and your team deliver projects on-time and within your budgets without spending hours and hours project managing. These resources are designed so that even organizations without dedicated project managers can train their team members on the basics of project management, regardless of their job titles.

The Team

Here are the consultants ready to bring you the insights to deliver better projects for your small business. They come with decades of experience working with enterprises, small businesses, and companies in between.
