Engagement Highlight: IT Support and Security Managed Services Provider

Here’s another installment in our series of posts about the Tuck Consulting Group (TCG) engagements that get us excited about our work.
Today, we’re highlighting our work with a managed services provider focused on IT support and cybersecurity for emerging professional services firms.

Client: Managed services provider focused on IT support and security for rapidly-growing businesses

Project: On-Demand IT Project Management Services

The Value Add

Initially, our client brought us onboard to provide a single project manager (PM) for a handful of engagements. After a few months, TCG earned their complete buy-in and we began sending them new IT PMs with experience leading infrastructure- and security projects. To address a continuously-growing need for project leadership and staff augmentation, we stood up an entire project management office (PMO). As our client’s needs evolve, we can onboard additional resources to the PMO within a week.

TCG’s Solution

Since our client’s own employees provide managed IT support and consulting services, they depend on us to provide the PMs who deliver exceptional service and represent their brand well. Our Project Management as a Service (PMaaS) framework addresses their need for scalability, flexibility, and competent project management.

TCG actually runs new PM candidates through a trial project to ensure that their skills and values align with this client’s objectives and team culture. We have been serving with them for over a year; now we are providing highly-specialized consultants whom they can white-label when the need arises. This practice allows our client to eliminate its bench of PM talent and apply to the savings to its areas of expertise. At present, we have five consultants supporting our client’s growth and success:

TCG’s Approach

With TCG’s PMO driving the work, our client delivered a diverse array of projects and initiatives, including:

  • Installing new lab equipment for a biotech start-up
  • Designing and delivering a curriculum on cybersecurity best-practices (KnowBe4)
  • Migrating a knowledge management database from Box to OneDrive
  • Upgrading Meraki switches for on-site servers at a journal of record
  • WLAN redesign for a robotics start-up
  • Adding Intune to client devices at a cloud security firm
  • Numerous office moves, server/cloud migrations, and network installations

TCG PMaaS helps address a broad range of business problems because we recruit from an experienced and well-credentialed pool of candidates. Our proprietary method for sourcing talent incorporates multiple screens for technical aptitude and emotional intelligence – our client counts on us to bring in PMs who can build consensus from Day 1.

How TCG Delivers Value

Our client relies upon us to scale up their project management capabilities without making a long-term investment in PM talent. Since TCG consultants work remotely and split their time among engagements, our client benefits from having knowledgeable PMs available to them for ONLY as long as their expertise is needed. For their part, the TCG PMs enjoy a flexible work schedule, a convenient work environment, and a variety of exciting and rewarding engagements. TCG fosters the intersection of talented project management professionals and the innovative, technology-focused organizations who need them. In the case of this particular client, we expanded this intersection over the course of a year. Our PMs have become de facto colleagues with the client’s staff, and they look forward to mutual growth through the TCG-supported PMO!

Good project managers bring what PMI calls “power skills” to the table – something AI cannot. From PMI’s Pulse of the Profession® 2023 report: “Power skills — also known as interpersonal skills or soft skills such as communication, problem-solving and collaborative leadership — are proving essential for project professionals. They are at the heart of leading successful teams, engaging stakeholders and conquering challenges to the project plan. Technical skills enable project managers to chart the path from the start of a project to close, but power skills are how they bring the entire team along for the journey to execute a common vision.”
