The Challenge
Local Motion faced a couple of challenges: 1) the organization didn’t have a clear view into the connection between the work plans they were executing and the impact it was having on the goals in their strategic plan, and 2) the team was underutilizing their project management tool, Asana. Individual work was being managed in individual Google sheets which prevented visibility into the impact on broader goals and key processes. This lack of centralized visibility limited operational efficiency and made it hard for team members to see the impact of their contributions. The organization needed a solution to bridge the gap between daily activities and strategic objectives, empowering staff with tools and processes that would drive engagement, clarity, and measurable progress.
The Solution
Tuck Consulting Group partnered with Local Motion through a pro bono engagement, focusing on optimizing their Asana environment. The team conducted interviews, reviewed existing work plans and templates, and performed a thorough gap analysis. Solutions were designed and implemented directly within Asana, including the creation of templatized annual plans for key programs and a comprehensive dashboard to visualize progress against strategic and DEI goals. Tuck led training sessions to ensure adoption. Recommendations were also made for tool consolidation and business process optimization, particularly in volunteer management. The collaborative, iterative approach ensured that solutions were practical, impactful, and embraced by leadership and staff alike.
The Results
The engagement delivered transformative results for Local Motion. All full-time staff were successfully onboarded to the new project management system, with over 120 work plan tasks now strategically aligned and visible through a centralized dashboard. Leadership gained a 360° view of organizational efforts, enabling better decision-making and resource allocation. The adoption of standardized project management practices improved efficiency and accountability, while templatized plans reduced administrative overhead. The impact extended beyond the core team: training materials that Tuck developed for the 2024 Vermont Nonprofit Summit were repurposed and shared across the organization, supporting broader adoption. The project’s success demonstrated the value of tailored, mission-driven consulting for nonprofits.
